I've always loved making homemade BBQ sauce when I have the time — there's something satisfying about being able to dial in exactly the flavor you want. This peach BBQ sauce started as a fun summer experiment and quickly became the version I reach for most.
The best part is how simple it is. Everything goes into a blender, you blend it smooth, then simmer it down until thick and glossy — that's it. No cooking the peaches first, no complicated technique. Just good ingredients and a little patience while it reduces on the stove.
It works year-round, too, which I love — peak summer with fresh peaches straight from the farmers market, or January with canned or frozen peaches.

Which Peaches to Use
Fresh, frozen or canned peaches all work. Here's what you need to know:
|
Fresh Peaches |
The best flavor when peaches are at peak ripeness. Choose peaches that are fragrant, slightly soft at the stem, and deeply golden. Peel before using — score an X in the bottom and blanch for 30 seconds in boiling water, then transfer to ice water and the skin slips right off. |
|
Frozen Peaches |
Great year-round option. Thaw completely and drain any excess liquid before blending. Their flavor is very close to fresh. |
|
Canned Peaches |
Convenient and consistent. Use peaches packed in juice (not syrup) if possible and drain well. |
Important Ingredients and Substitutions
Tomato sauce — Use plain canned pureed tomato sauce, not marinara or pasta sauce. The marinara has added seasonings that will change the flavor profile of the BBQ sauce.
Red wine vinegar — Adds tang and brightness. Apple cider vinegar or distilled white vinegar can be swapped in the same amount.
Liquid smoke — Essential for that BBQ sauce depth and smokiness. A little goes a long way — don't skip it or substitute it.
Unsulphured molasses — Adds rich caramel sweetness and depth. Use unsulphured for the cleanest flavor; Blackstrap is too bitter for this recipe.
Smoked paprika — Doubles down on the smoky flavor alongside the liquid smoke. Regular sweet paprika works but loses the smokiness.
Recipe Variations
Have fun riffing on this recipe, finding your favorite twist:
- Spicy Peach BBQ Sauce — Double the cayenne to ¼ teaspoon and add a few hearty shakes of your favorite hot sauce. Excellent on wings.
- Peach Bourbon BBQ Sauce — Add 2 tablespoons of bourbon to the saucepan after blending. The bourbon peach BBQ sauce cooks down, adding a warm, oaky depth that pairs beautifully with smoked pork and ribs.
- Peach Mustard BBQ Sauce — Increase the ground mustard to 1 teaspoon and add 1 tablespoon of Dijon for a tangier, more complex sauce.
- Extra Smoky — Add an extra ½ teaspoon of liquid smoke and swap regular paprika for chipotle powder.
How to Make Peach BBQ Sauce
For the complete recipe and measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step 1: Add all ingredients to a blender in the order listed — liquids first, then solids and spices.
Step 2: Blend on high for 15–30 seconds until completely smooth with a texture similar to thick soup.
Step 3: Pour the blended sauce into a medium saucepan. Heat over medium-high until simmering.
Step 4: Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer uncovered, stirring every 5 minutes, for 25–30 minutes until thickened to your preferred consistency.
Step 5: Taste and adjust — more honey or brown sugar for sweetness, more vinegar for tang, more cayenne for heat. Use immediately or cool completely before storing.
Chelsea's Recipe Pro-Tips
- Liquids go in first — Adding liquids to the blender before the solids protects the blade and ensures the smoothest blend. Follow the order in the recipe card.
- No blender? A food processor works great as a substitute. If you don't have either, add the ingredients to a quart-sized measuring cup and use an immersion blender — it'll get the job done.
- Stir every 5 minutes — As the sauce simmers and reduces, it thickens and can catch on the bottom of the pan. Regular stirring prevents burning and ensures even reduction.
- Simmer uncovered — You want the moisture to evaporate so the sauce thickens. Covering the pan traps steam and prevents proper reduction.
- Adjust to taste at the end — After simmering, taste and adjust. More honey for sweetness, more vinegar for tang, more cayenne for heat. The flavors deepen as it cooks, so always taste before serving.
Storage Directions
- Refrigerating: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
- Freezing: Freeze in 1-cup portions (affiliate link) in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or in a pan over low heat.
- Heating: Warm in a saucepan over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring periodically, or microwave on gentle heat.
Serving Suggestions
This peach BBQ sauce is incredibly versatile — use it anywhere you'd reach for a classic BBQ sauce. It's excellent stirred into Instant Pot BBQ Chicken for a sweet and smoky pulled chicken that works for sandwiches, bowls, and tacos all week. It's also perfect as the sauce base for Barbecue Chicken Flatbread or used in place of traditional sauce in BBQ Chicken Nachos
For a quick weeknight protein, brush it over grilled chicken thighs or BBQ Air Fryer Salmon Bites in the last few minutes of cooking.
Peach BBQ Sauce Recipe FAQs
Yes — both work well. Thaw frozen peaches completely and drain before blending. For canned, drain well before blending.
Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, it keeps for up to 10 days. It also freezes well for up to 3 months.
Yes — freeze in 1-cup portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or gently in a saucepan over low heat. Making a double batch during peak peach season and freezing half is one of my favorite summer meal prep moves.
Everything. Grilled chicken, smoked pork ribs, pulled pork, shrimp, wings, brisket, turkey burgers, and salmon are all excellent. It also works as a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets, air fryer sweet potato fries, and roasted vegetables.
Simmer it longer. The longer the peach BBQ sauce simmers, the more moisture evaporates and the thicker it becomes. If it's still thinner than you'd like after 30 minutes, continue simmering in 5-minute increments until it reaches your preferred consistency. Always be sure to simmer uncovered, too.
