Every summer I wait for blackberry season specifically so I can make this Blackberry Bourbon Smash. Five ingredients, five minutes, and a drink that looks like it took way more effort than it did.

What makes this blackberry smash cocktail different from most is that it uses fresh muddled blackberries instead of store-bought syrup or juice. Muddling fresh berries releases their natural juices and color in a way that no bottle can replicate — you get real berry flavor, beautiful color, and a freshness that makes this taste like it came from a proper cocktail bar. The ginger beer on top adds a gentle fizz and a little kick that ties everything together.

What Is a Bourbon Smash?

A bourbon smash is a classic smash cocktail made by muddling fresh fruit and herbs with citrus juice, sugar, and bourbon over ice. The "smash" refers to the muddling technique — smashing fresh ingredients to release their natural juices and flavors. This blackberry bourbon smash uses fresh blackberries, mint leaves, lime, sugar, and bourbon for a perfectly balanced summer drink. It's bright, fruity, a little bold, and incredibly easy to make at home.

How to Muddle Blackberries

Muddling is easier than it sounds — but technique matters.

How to do it: Add the blackberries, lime slices, sugar, and mint leaves to the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, press and twist firmly — not aggressively — until the berries are broken down and juicy and the mint is fragrant.

The key: You want the berries crushed and the lime juice released, but don't overwork it. Over-muddling bruises the mint, which makes it taste bitter instead of fresh. Stop when the mixture looks deeply colored and smells vibrant.

No muddler? The back of a wooden spoon works perfectly. You don't need any special equipment.

The Mocktail Version

The mocktail version of this blackberry smash is so good my non-drinking friends request it specifically. It's not an afterthought — it's a legitimately delicious drink on its own.

Blackberry Mint Smash Mocktail: Follow the recipe exactly as written, swapping the 2 ounces of bourbon for 2 ounces of sparkling water or additional ginger beer. Muddle the blackberries, lime, sugar, and mint, add ice and the sparkling water, shake briefly, strain into a glass, and top with ginger beer. Garnish with fresh blackberries and mint. Equally beautiful, equally refreshing.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed to make blackberry bourbon smashes.

Bourbon — Choose a smooth, approachable bourbon with vanilla and caramel notes. Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, and Woodford Reserve all work beautifully. A mid-range bottle ($25–40) is the sweet spot — no need to use your best bottle for a cocktail. Rye whiskey substitutes well for a spicier, less sweet profile.

Ginger beer — Adds fizz and a spicy warmth that pairs beautifully with the blackberry and bourbon. Ginger ale is milder and less spicy — it works but won't have the same kick.

Lime slices — Muddling whole slices (not just juiced) release the essential oils from the peel along with the juice, which adds a more complex citrus flavor. Don't substitute bottled lime juice here.

Fresh mint leaves — Use fresh, not dried. Mint adds a cooling brightness that balances the bourbon's warmth. Handle gently and don't overwork them — bruising them will give the cocktail a bitter flavor.

Cane or white sugar — A small amount to balance the tartness. Simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, dissolved) substitutes well if you prefer a cleaner sweetness — use about 1 teaspoon.

Recipe Variations

I've made a lot of versions of this blackberry whiskey cocktail — here are the ones worth trying:

  • Spicy Blackberry Bourbon Smash — Add a thin jalapeño slice to the muddling mix for a cocktail with a slow, satisfying heat.
  • Blackberry Rosemary Smash — Swap the mint for a small sprig of fresh rosemary for a more elegant, herbaceous flavor.
  • Blackberry Lemonade Smash — Swap the lime for lemon slices. Brighter and more citrusy.
  • Blackberry Peach Smash — Add 2 slices of fresh ripe peach to the muddle for a sweet-tart summer combination.
  • Pitcher Version — Multiply the recipe by 8. Muddle all the blackberries and lime together in a large pitcher, add bourbon and stir well. Store covered in the fridge. Shake individual portions over ice and top with ginger beer just before serving.

★ Top Pro Tip

Don't over-muddle — Press firmly until the berries are juicy and the mint is fragrant. Any further and you risk bruising the mint, which turns bitter. The mixture should smell vibrant and fresh, not grassy.

Chelsea's Recipe Pro-Tips

  • Always strain — A few blackberry seeds or bits are fine, but straining after shaking keeps the texture smooth and drinkable. Don't skip this step.
  • Chill your glass — Pop the highball glass in the freezer for 15–30 minutes before making the cocktail. It keeps everything colder longer and slows ice melt, so your drink doesn't dilute as quickly.
  • Use fresh ice in the glass — Strain the cocktail over fresh ice in the glass, not the ice from the shaker. Shaker ice has already diluted slightly — fresh ice keeps the drink crisp.
  • Shake until frosty — 20–30 seconds of vigorous shaking is what you're looking for. The outside of the shaker should be frosty cold when it's done.

Storage & Make-Ahead

  • Make-ahead: Muddle the blackberries, lime, sugar, and mint together and mix with the bourbon. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 hours. Shake individual portions over ice just before serving — don't add ice to the batch or it will dilute as it sits—and pour ginger beer over before serving.
  • Batch for a party: Multiply the recipe, muddle everything together in a pitcher, add the bourbon, and refrigerate. Add ginger beer per glass at serving time for the best fizz.
  • Leftover cocktail: Best consumed immediately. Strained leftover cocktail can be refrigerated for up to 1 day but won't be as vibrant.

Serving Suggestions

This Blackberry Bourbon Smash is a natural fit for summer cookouts, Fourth of July parties, and backyard dinners — the deep purple color is stunning and practically serves itself. Pair it with Peach Salsa and chips for an easy summer appetizer, or serve alongside Salmon with Mango Salsa or Balsamic Chicken Thigh Marinade for dinner.

Blackberry Bourbon Smash Recipe FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes — muddle the blackberries and mix with bourbon up to 4 hours ahead and refrigerate. Shake individual portions over ice and top with ginger beer just before serving. Never add ice to the batch in advance — it dilutes as it sits.

What bourbon is best for a blackberry smash?

Choose a smooth bourbon with vanilla and caramel notes — Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, or Woodford Reserve all work beautifully. A mid-range bottle ($25–40) is the sweet spot. No need to use a premium bottle.

Can I use frozen blackberries?

Yes — thaw completely and drain excess liquid before muddling. The flavor is slightly less vibrant than peak-season fresh blackberries but works well year-round.

What can I substitute for bourbon?

Rye whiskey gives a spicier, less sweet profile. Vodka creates a cleaner, more neutral blackberry cocktail. Dark rum adds tropical warmth. For a non-alcoholic version, see below.

How do I make the mocktail version?

Swap the bourbon for 2 ounces of sparkling water or additional ginger beer. Muddle, shake briefly, strain over ice, and top with ginger beer. Full instructions in the Mocktail section above.
